The article reviews history and approaches to studying migration in Russia (primarily internal) on the background of changing migration processes and the transformation of the institutional environment. The change of priorities and directions in migration research is considered in chronological order, the most significant research works for each period, their authors and institutes are presented, and the shifting attitudes within the scientific community are demonstrated. In conclusion, the main current trends in studying internal migration in Russia and promising areas of research are listed.
