Abstract:
Modification of the human body is a phenomenon observed throughout human history, but right now, due to the ever-accelerating technological development, human corporeality is under the threat of irreversible change. This paper reviews the impact of technology on the phenomenon of corporeality, analyses connection between posthumanism views and the concept of embodied cognition. The author refers to a number of science fiction works that form a relevant and representative narrative on a given issue. Corporeality is considered from the standpoint of the phenomenological approach; the thesis is formulated about the human body as an important factor in building identity and subjectivity. “Dehumanization” as a result of body modification seems, according to the author, unlikely, because all enhancement technologies remain anthropocentric, being a continuation and result of centuries-old interaction between man (his body) and technology.
