Abstract:
The Brezhnev era (1964–1982), for all its scarcity, was marked by a high level of consumption and its wide distribution. As a prestigious form of consumption and a source of social capital, theatre was in high demand by Soviet people. The essay demonstrates the diversity of consumer demands and peculiar attitudes towards consumption among Soviet leaders, highlights the role the Taganka Theatre and others played in the sociopolitical education of citizens.
